Day 8: Cortez, CO, 120 miles

Today we get to sleep in a little which gives me a chance to catch up on the blog (my internal clock gets me up at 5:30am no matter where I sleep).

Before heading to Colorado we have reservations for a river rafting trip down the Colorado river in Fisher Towers Canyon right next to Arches NP. We head out on the water after 11:00am, the temp is approaching 100 degrees.

The Lucas' has fun getting in and out of the river during the quiet water spots. Even our boat captain and guide, Justin, cools down often on the way down river.

"It's so tranquil."-Gracie

We stop halfway down at a nice sandy beach for lunch. While we are all standing around talking we discover a friend from home. The guide of one of the other boats in our group happens to not only be from Puyallup, but also attended the school where I teach, Pope! Ryan Adams also has common friends with Maddy so that was fun for her.

"It's so treacherous."-Gracie
The surrounding canyon was amazing.

We get back to the truck and realize how hot it really was on the river with no shade.

Back to State #6

We make our way to Cortez, only 2 hours in the car this time, but we are hungry and tired. We check in to our seedy little motel and look for a place to eat. We are craving Mexican and find a place within walking distance.
Once there, we get schooled on the difference between southwest food and Mexican food. Skylar feels adventurous and wants to try some new peppers.
"I felt the sweet, and then I was like wait, that's hot."-Skylar

My favorite thing today: class 3 rapids and never having to lift an oar.
