Day 13: Visalia, CA, 426 miles

We let the kids sleep in this morning and hit the road around 10:00. After loading the truck w sweat running down our faces we get it loaded and everyone piles in the truck. Joani realizes that Skylar has left his iPhone charger plugged in back in room 22-125.

"I'm in charge of my own chargers." - Joani

Best thing about Vegas:
Maddy "the hotel we stayed at."
Skylar "the food. Lots of food."
Gracie "The shooting at the Fashion Show Mall just hours after we were there."
Joani "poolside massage"
Cindi "A real bed"

Found a big truck stop right before the state line to fill up with diesel. We felt like a big rig when they gave us a free soda with fill up. The donut holes were a bonus too!
State #10
First stop, the Mojave National Preserve. It's hot here but doesn't seem as oppressive as the Vegas heat was.

Cindi is in love with Joshua trees and wonders if they would grow in eastern Washington.
Maddy is hoping to see a tortoise.
We read that you need to check under parked cars for them. Also they will spray their urine in self defense, thus depleting themselves of precious liquid so it's important not to approach them. The info ended up being useless as we didn't come across any.

We get to the visitor center only to discover that it is closed on Thursdays. The building was beautiful - it was built in 1924 as a Union Pacific train station.
We peeked in the windows to see a re-creation of the train office.
They also had the original 2 cell open air jail from when Kelso was in it's hey day back during WWII.
Some scenes from the beautiful Mojave desert.

Here is the asshole who almost killed us.
We took turns using our handy random insult generator to call him names.
(Obviously purchased at the Stupidiotic store)
"Did you take a marijuana?"-Skylar
"Despicable dick biscuit."-Gracie

Somehow we ended back on Route 66.

We finally roll into a town that might provide lunch. Barstow, CA has a lot of motels and liquor stores, but not many restaurants. This Denny's saved us! It was after 3pm by the time we ate so we called it linner.
Bakersfield Starbucks stop
Cindi was having trouble seeing the on ramp with the sun in her eyes...
"Don't worry about the asshole behind you, just take your time and find it."-Joani

Joani has a thing for alternative power so she really got a kick out of seeing the huge wind turbine fields.

After 8 hours of driving we finally pull into our camp site. Maddy insists on building the tent herself.
"I didn't have anything else to do."-Cindi

My favorite thing today: building the tent with my son in record time. No arguing, no blazing heat. We are getting good at this.

Of coarse I also loved all the laughs the insult generater provided on the road today, but I think I will love that every day. I mean come on, did you read that thing, it's a gut buster.
